Annual Report |
Northeast Pennsylvania Area Health Education Center (Northeast AHEC) covers Bradford, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties. Cooperating Medical School Each Pennsylvania AHEC region has a cooperating medical school which works with the region. The Commonwealth Medical College is the cooperating school for the Northeast AHEC. Background To increase access to primary health care services, the PA AHEC program plans, develops and coordinates community-based interdisciplinary training opportunities for health science students and primary care residents in rural and urban medically underserved areas. Recruitment and retention is promoted through innovative practice support programs and community resources development. Health career opportunity programs are important vehicles for identifying individuals interested in returning to their "home" community as practicing health care professionals. The AHEC also works to identify regional health risks. Efforts are made to link with existing local, state, and federal programs or develop new community health education programs as a means to address identified health risks. The AHEC actively encourages health promotion and disease prevention through community education and public health initiatives. NEPA AHEC was established in the summer of 1999.
