An Interactive Day! Promoting Science Readiness among Girls Collaboration among NEPA AHEC, the Scranton Pocono Girls Scout Council and the University of Scranton Neuroscience Program
Home Schooled Troop with Leaders Serving nine northeast counties in Pennsylvania, the non-profit Northeast Pennsylvania Area Health Education Center (NEPA AHEC) promotes access to health care through education. The NEPA AHEC realized that to have a lasting impact on the recruitment and retention of health care professionals for our community a "home-grown" candidate is ideal. The NEPA AHEC provides health career awareness programs throughout the region, exposing students to rewarding opportunities in the health care field. We encourage them, upon completion of their education, to return "home" as our communities' health care providers.
University of Scranton Students Demonstrate Synapses with Ping Pong Balls To achieve this, the NEPA AHEC supports community partnerships and initiatives promoting science, math and health career exploration. The Kids Judge! Neuroscience collaboration among NEPA AHEC, the Girl Scouts Scranton Pocono Council and the University of Scranton's Neuroscience program is one of many projects NEPA AHEC co-sponsors. As each school year begins, the Kids Judge! Neuroscience science collaboration targets and attracts girls. Interest among girls in science increases as they actively engage in programs like Kids Judge! Neuroscience. As girls become more knowledgeable and comfortable with science topics and activities, they pursue educational pathways leading to many health professional careers that in the past have attracted more males then females. To maintain this educational pathway, NEPA AHEC also invites ninth and tenth grade students from Northeast Pennsylvania to its summer camp, Exploring Careers in Health.
